St Matthew’s to hold fundraisin­g ‘Jog-Walk-a-thon’ on July 7

KUCHING: The St Matthew’s Church fundraisin­g committee will hold a ‘Jog-Walk- a-thon’ on July 7.

Funds raised from the event themed ‘Small Steps, Big Future’ will go towards the St Matthew’s Church Sungai Maong building fund, which is part of the Anglican Church in Sarawak and Brunei, known as the Diocese of Kuching.

“At present the church ministers to the Chinese-speaking congregati­on in the Sungai Maong Baru/ Batu Kawah area and around Kuching area from a shophouse block.

“We hope to raise some RM30,000 from the event, which will go towards the church building fund, for the advancemen­t of the Kingdom of God,” said St Matthew’s Parish priest in charge Revd Then Jit Seng in a press release yesterday.

Then said this will be the second year St Matthew’s is holding the event, which will include both a 3.3km running and 2.5km walking route to give participan­ts more options.

“We will begin the event at 7.30am with songs and warming up exercises at the courtyard of St Thomas’ Cathedral, Jalan McDougall. The flag- off for the event will be at 8am,” he added.

The walking route will cover Jalan McDougall, Jalan Reservoir, Jalan Tun Abang Haji Openg, and back to the Cathedral, while the runners will proceed further north to scale the hilly route along Jalan Tabuan, then proceed to Jalan Tan Sri Ong Kee Hui before returning to the Museum-Reservoir Park junction and heading back to the Cathedral.

Organisers estimate the walk or run will take between 30 and 40 minutes, depending on pace.

Participan­ts will be issued official sponsorshi­p cards with a minimum collection of RM50 set.

The closing date to enter is this Sunday (July 1).

St Matthew’s Church Sungai Maong currently has over 130 registered members.

The Holy Communion Service is every Sunday at 5pm at 1st Floor, Sublot 475, Jalan Stapok Utama, Batu Kawah.

On the first Sunday of each month, there is also a service at 8am.
