KUCHING: A total of 260 participants from various public and private agencies attended the Fire and Rescue Department’s (Bomba) Emergency Response Team ( ERT) training programme.

Stampin member of parliament Chong Chieng Jen, who officiated at the closing ceremony, said improved awareness in fire safety and prevention, especially for the workplace, is extremely important to prevent and reduce loss of life and property.

“Being equipped with proper knowledge and skills on firefighting, employees can act and execute safety procedures effectively and efficiently to prevent property damage and injury, or loss of life in the event of fire,” he told a press conference on Wednesday.

“I also want to encourage teams to cooperate with Bomba to ensure effective handling and management of fire incidents in their respective places of work.”

He said ERT plays a very important role in supporting Bomba to carry out its mission and responsibilities.

“It is also hoped that teams can respond fast in the event of fire but with safety as the priority at all times. Your initial actions to control fire while waiting for Bomba to arrive can contribute to the reduction or prevention of property damage and commercial loss,” he added.

Participants were divided into 24 teams to take up four challenges – firefighting equipment operation, fireman’s lift, ironman ERT, and hosing down flames from 300 feet.

The objective of the programme was to improve the skills of fire safety teams working in premises or buildings categorised as high risk to respond more quickly and appropriately to fires.
