SIBU: Although he has hung up his golf clubs many years ago, Temenggong Dato Vincent Lau Lee Ming still talks fondly of the sport he loved greatly in his younger days.

“I was an active golfer in the early formative years of Sibu Golf Club (SGC) in the 80s when it only had 5-hole golf course with a very simple club house,” he said during a courtesy call by SGC captain Peter Chiong, secretary Roland Ha and committee member Robert Lau Siew Hui on Wednesday.

Lau, who is KTS Group deputy managing director, said he put golf aside because of work commitment and responsibility as a community leader.

“Golf is a healthy and challenging sport suitable for both young and old. Sibu is lucky to have a wellmaintained golf course.

“We must pay tribute to past leaders, especially the late Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr Wong Soon Kai as it was during his tenure as SGC president from 1993 to 2009 that the course was expanded to an 18- hole course along with a new and impressive club house,” he added.

The SGC delegat ion a lso thanked Lau for sponsoring the 19th Sibu Amateur Open Golf Championship.

The three- day championship tees off today with over 100 golfers from Sarawak, Sabah and Brunei vying for honours.

Lau also donated two units of STIHL FR320 brush cutter to SGC. It will be handed over to the club on July 13 during a demonstration of the product, organised by KTS Trading Sdn Bhd, at the club house.
