Jin Wei advances to Malaysia Open last eight

KUALA LUMPUR: National women’s singles player Goh Jin Wei has maintained her winning streak when she shocked South Korean seeded player to reach the quarter-finals of the 2018 Malaysia Open Celcom Axiata yesterday.

In the second round match, Jin Wei lost 15-21 in the first set to world number nine Sung Ji Hyun but it did not prevent her from rising in the last two sets to win 21-18 and 23-21 at Axiata Arena, Sports City of Kuala Lumpur, Bukit Jalil.

Jin Wei said her victory was very meaningful as she was able to beat the world’s best player at own turf in a fierce battle especially when they were tied 19-19 in the last set.

“I am very pleased with this win, I pushed myself to win this game. The opponent could read my game especially in the last set, but I managed to give good and consistent shots.

“When I was playing, I did not think I was here to gain experience but I wanted to push myself to win every game,” she told reporters.

Jin Wei said the support from local fans helped her to win the match and boosted her confidence to appear more competitiv­e later.

Waiting for her in the quarterfin­al will be either be Taiwan’s number one Tai Tzu Ying or Michelle Li of Canada.

“If I meet Tzu Ying, I will play like today, all- out, throughout the game, despite our wide ranking gap, I will still give her a tough fight,” she said. — Bernama
