MIRI: The proposal to build a new RM70 million- health centre here has received the blessing of the Ministry of Health

In revealing this, Miri MP Dr Michael Teo hoped the proposed project would be able to improve the public health services here, and solve the congestion and poor health facilities at three health centres here, namely, Miri Hospital, polyclinic, and Mother and Child Health Clinic at Jalan Temenggong Datuk Oyong Lawai Jau.

“As a medical doctor, issues related to health are very close to my heart. I have talked to the health minister on problems faced at the three health centres here.

“The proposal that I have forwarded has received positive response from the ministry as it is the cheapest solution to provide the best health services and better health facilities for the people here,” he told a press conference at PKR Miri Service Centre here yesterday.

He added that he had identified a suitable land of about 8.5 acres at Tanjong Lobang for the proposed project.

The proposed health centre, he added, would be a seven- storey building with a polyclinic to be housed on the ground f loor. The building would also house an administrative office, and a dental clinic.

He added that the maternity ward at Miri Hospital would be transferred to the new centre, thus giving more space at the hospital, which caters to patients in practically the whole northern region of Sarawak.

Dr Teo also said the ministry had agreed to place a brain surgeon at Miri Hospital as the existing arrangement is for patients to be sent to Sarawak General Hospital in Kuching, which incurs additional cost for the hospital here.
