100 golfers tee off for 14th World Bidayuh Championship
KUCHING: Some 100 golfers from throughout Sarawak and as far as Sabah and Kuala Lumpur took part in the 14th World Bidayuh Golf Championship ( WBGC) at Samarahan Country Club last Saturday.
They were joined by 20 invited guest golfers from the Chinese, Malays, Iban, Melanau and Orang Ulu communities.
The prize presentation- cumlunch at the Dayak Bidayuh National Association ( DBNA) headquarters was of f iciated by tournament sponsor Dato Sri Michael Manyin Jawong who i s Educat ion, Science and Technological Research Minister.
Magit Semong lifted the Dato Sri Michael Manyin Challenge Trophy for the fourth time since 2014 when he won the gross category with a 78.
Finishing second and third were Zackarias Kho ( 80) and Dominic Josip (84).
The DBNA President Challenge Trophy for the nett title went to Andrew Peter ( 65) followed by Walter Suhai ( 66) and Lester Matthew (67).
Alice Ripet carried home the Datin Sri Mary Manyin Challenge Trophy for winning the women’s category with a gross score of 90. Second was Beatrice Miren (100).
The Togap Challenge Trophy was won by Jordan Hong who beat all the invited guest golfers with a gross score of 81. Gerard Tan (82) and Luqman Nul Hakim (83) were runner-up and third.
The c eremony a l so saw the unvei ling of the Sports Commission’s certificate for the newly-registered Togap or Bidayuh Golf Club.
The WBGC started in 2005 as a tournament open only to golfers from the Bidayuh community and those with Bidayuh ancestry. Participation was open to a select few golfers from other communities in 2016 to compete in the invited guests category.
Also present at the prize presentation and lunch were Serembu assemblyman Miro Simuh DBNA president Datu Ik Pahon Joyik and Togap president Dr Simon Sinang Bada.
