Hope Place, tuition centre team up to help needy Beratok family

-

KUCHING: Hope Place Kuching recently teamed up with Pusat Tuisyen Sri Maju Diri in carrying out charity work to help a needy family here.

Hope Place founder Kelvin Wan and tuition centre manager Chai Wee Han led the centre’s students to deliver rice, cooking oil, noodles, salt, sugar, biscuits, bottled water, Milo and soaps to the family.

A press statement by Hope Place yesterday said the head of the family, 64-year- old Lai Shoon Choi, is handicapped and had lost his wife to cancer a few months ago.

“Their son is still studying in primary school. Lai’s house in Beratok is without piped water or 24-hour electricity supply and he has no form of transportation, not even a motorcycle,” said the statement.

It added that Lai lost one of his hands in 1968 after he was knocked down by a car while walking home. To get to his house, one needs to walk for about 15 minutes along a muddy path and across two bamboo bridges.

“The bamboo bridges are in immediate need of repairs, and they pose safety risk to those using them. Lai has said that he hopes someone could help repair the bridges.”

The statement further added that a kind donor had recently sponsored a water tank and had it installed at Lai’s home.

Hope Place carries out aid deliveries once every three months as it has more than 200 families on its list of recipients.

The non- governmental organisation can be reached on 013- 5672775 or 082- 505987 from 8.30am to noon, and 2pm to 5pm, Mondays to Fridays; and from 9am to noon on Saturdays.
