Sarawak to compete in all 29 sports for Perak Sukma

KUCHING: Sarawak’s 850 athletes will take part in all 29 sports at the upcoming Sukma to be held in Perak from Sept 12-22.

The sports are archery, athletics, aquatics (swimming and diving), badminton, basketball, boxing, cricket, cycling, football, futsal, golf, gymnastics ( artistic and rhythmic), handball, hockey (men’s and women’s), judo, karate, lawn bowl, muaythai, netball, petanque, rugby, sailing, shooting, sepak takraw, silat, squash, taekwondo, tenpin bowling, weightlift­ing and wushu.

The state contingent will be led by chef de mission (CDM) and Assistant Minister of Youth and Sports Datuk Snowdan Lawan. Sixteen contingent leaders were announced at a meeting chaired by Snowdan at a hotel here yesterday.

The two CDM are Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports permanent secretary Ministry Hii Chang Kee and Sarawak Sports Council chief executive officer Dr Ong Kong Swee while assistant CDM are Datuk Ahmad Ibrahim ( cycling and judo), Pantai Damai assemblyma­n Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi (petanque, handball), Dr Ong Kong Swee ( swimming and diving), Layar assemblyma­n Layar Gerald Rentap Jabu (weightlift­ing, boxing and rugby), Azizul Adenan ( lawn bowls, taekwondo), Datin Mary Saadiah ( hockey, gymnastics), Tamin assemblyma­n Christophe­r Gira Sambang ( golf, sailing), Serembu assemblyma­n Miro Simuh ( sepak takraw, netball), Murum assemblyma­n Kennedy Chukpai Ugon (muaythai, track and field), Sunny Sii Poh Heng ( tenpin bowling, shooting) , Tupong assemblyma­n Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman (silat, futsal and football), Machan assemblyma­n Allan Siden Gramong (archery, karate and wushu), Allen Wong Siew Poh (wushu, basketball and badminton) and Robert Lau Hui Yew (squash, cricket).

“We hope to emerge champion this year with target of 77 gold medals,” Snowdan stressed.

“We have prepared very well for the games with strategy planning,” he added.
