Court remands suspected child abuser for three days

-

MIRI: A man arrested on suspicion of abusing his girlfriend’s threeyearold daughter was yesterday remanded by the Magistrates’ Court here for three days to facilitate police investigation.

The 38-year- old suspect from Taman Bumiko was ordered to undergo the remand at the Miri Central police station under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

Investigating officer Insp Saiful Azizi Kamlun had said the suspect was arrested around 1.30am on Tuesday at a rented house at Jalan Pujut following a police report made by a 27-year- old woman on Monday.

In her report, the complainant said around 12.30pm last Friday, she discovered bruises near her daughter’s left and right ears, as well as cheek.

Prior to the discovery, her daughter had been looked after by her boyfriend at his rented house.

In his application, Saiful said a four- day remand was needed to enable the police to carry out a thorough investigation under Section 31 (1)(a) of the Child Act 2001.

Apart from that, Saiful said releasing the suspect early might also jeopardise the safety of the woman and her daughter.

However, the court only allowed a three- day remand order, which will end on Friday.
