Stop giving projects to selected cronies – Pelawan rep

-

GABUNGAN Parti Sarawak (GPS) must change its mode of operation from its predecessor if it is serious in bringing about positive changes to the lives of all Sarawkians.

David Wong Kee Woan ( DAPPelawan) said the GPS government, among others, must stop giving out projects to selected cronies without open tender and giving monopolistic concessions to a selected few, especially in cement and road maintenance and bridgebuilding.

He said the GPS government also has to be fair and colour blind so that all Sarawakians are treated fairly and equitably, be transparent in all its dealings and to acknowledge that the people are the boss.

“What do Sarawakians want, you may ask. Actually it is easy to be the government of the day because the people are not that demanding. All they want is good economy, good education and health care, affordable housing and social blanket for the needy, and most of all, a clean and fair government,” he said when debating the Head of State’s address yesterday.

Wong also called on the government not to ignore Sibu anymore.

He said there was a need to improve the transportation woes and build more roads and road connectivity to ease the traffic congestion at several areas in Sibu, such as Jalan Ulu Sg Merah, Jalan Wong King Ho, Jalan Oya from Jalan RTM to Jalan Deshon, and Jalan lgan near Sg Merah.

He said there was also a need to build the RM70 million- Sibu Outer Link, which he proposed when the late Tok Nan was still chief minister.

“My proposal included building two new roads, a short bridge, expansion of parts of Jajan Oya at the junction of SugarBun Oya to Jalan Tun Abdul Rahman into a two-lane trunk road.

“We also need to turn Jalan Ulu Sungai Merah into a 2-lane road as more than 1,000 houses have been built there in the past 10 years or so. There are also two schools along that road, namely SMK Sungai Merah and SJK (C) Nang Sang,” he said.

Wong claimed that the traffic congestion has angered many residents of Ulu Sg Merah because they have to face the daily frustration of commuting to schools and to their places of work. He said he was more than willing to work together with the government on this issue, and give his input to make it successful.

“l propose that the government set up a special transportation committee comprising GPS and PH members of this House to look into alternative to my proposal as well as the budget needed for the people of Sibu,” he said.
