Lorry attendant run over by own lorry, dies
SARATOK: An elderly lorry attendant was killed in a freak accident at Bukit Berayang, at KM31 Betong- Sarikei road yesterday afternoon.
The incident happened around 1.30pm when the victim, identified as Othman Abang Saboh of Kampung Tengah Beladin in Pusa, was pinned underneath the tyre of his own lorry.
According to sources, Othman and the lorry driver, surnamed Ting, were transporting electric cables and poles from Beladin when their vehicle ran out of fuel.
Ting – with the help of a passing driver – then proceeded to push the vehicle from the front to the roadside while another man, identified as Othman’s nephew who arrived after being summoned, controlled the steering wheel.
In the process of doing so, however, the lorry went backwards and ran over Othman, who had been standing at the rear to alert oncoming vehicles.
The victim was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel, and his body sent by police to the hospital for a postmortem.
The incident is being investigated under section 41(1) of the Road transport Act 1987.
