Trainees teach English to village children

KUCHING: A group of TESL trainee teachers from the Institute of Teachers Education Tun Abdul Razak Campus ( IPGKTAR) taught a group of children during a Fun with English Programme at Badul Homestay in Singai, Bau near here recently.

Organised by the education bureau of Kampung Badul in collaborat­ion with the college, the programme was part of the institute’s Highly Immersive Programme ( HIP) to increase the trainees’ exposure to teaching English language in a fun and meaningful way outside school and also to improve their language proficienc­y.

A total 16 primary school children from Kampung Badul participat­ed in the oneday programme. Language activities included jazz chants, communicat­ive activities and language games. There was also a motivation­al talk by lecturers from the college’s Language Department Low Moi Jun, Juria Laing, and the trainee teachers.

IPGKTAR in a press release explained that the programme was tailored to increase awareness on the importance of using English whilst preserving their mother tongue, Bidayuh, among parents and members of the community

“Despite coming from different schools, the children had fun learning English, made new friends and converse in English in their community,” it added.

During the closing ceremony, village headman Jetri Suing hoped that more such activities would be held in the future.

He also expressed his gratitude to the trainees and lecturers for their initiative to enhance English language proficienc­y among the local children.
