S’wak dancers set for national dancesport c’ship

KUCHING: Sarawak DanceSport athletes Simon Tiew Hung Liang and Vanessa Lo Min Yu are gearing for their maiden outing at the first Malaysia WDSF Open DanceSport Championsh­ips to be held in Kuala Lumpur on Aug 18.

Both are from Russell & Randell Dance Company.

The duo will be the third Ten Dance couple from Sarawak to participat­e in the National Ranking and World DanceSport Federation (WDSF) Open Championsh­ips.

The first two couples, who had illustriou­s record at the national circuit, were Russell Lim Jian Liang and Alexis Jap Hsiao Tding - ranked second in both Standard and Latin categories in 2010, and Randell Lim Xiu Zhen and Cindy Chung Sin Yee, who were National Standard Champion in 2011 and ranked fifth in Latin category.

Simon, 25, and Vanessa, 16, won the Grade A Latin and third in Grade A Standard categories of the Sarawak DanceSport Championsh­ips at BCCK Kuching last month.

They were trained by Russell, Randell and Cindy Chung.

Russell opined that it would be good exposure for the pair who are rookies at the national circuit and WDSF competitio­ns.

Five other dancers namely Amy Kho Yien Xing, 14, Sabrina Chiam Jia Ern, 13, Fiona Chiam Jia Jia, 11, Candice Bong Qiao Ci, 9, and eight-year- old Vernice Bong Qiao Mean will also take part and they will be accompanie­d by team coach Cindy Chung.

Meanwhi l e , Tyng Dance Academy is expected to send six dancers to the competitio­n.
