Kapit celebrates Sarawak Day with special event

-

KAPIT: A special event was held here on Wednesday for the Kapit-level Sarawak Day celebration.

Some 100 heads of Sarawak and federal departments as well as community leaders attended the event, which included a choir presentation, welcoming dance, cake- cutting ceremony, and raising of the Sarawak flag

“To celebrate Sarawak Independence Day 2018 is to instil a sense of belonging and spirit of patriotism to our Sarawak. We should all appreciate that Sarawak is the safest place on earth. There are 39 ethnic groups and we live in unity, tolerance, and harmony. This is our homeland,” said Bukit Goram assemblyman Jefferson Jamit Unyat when officiating at the event.

“This practice of inter-racial understanding and tolerance, we must preserve and uphold as our way of life. These values we inherited from our elder generation must be safeguarded for the future generation.”

Jamit called for a celebration on a bigger scale in future so more Sarawakians would understand the history of Sarawak.

“Under the Malaysia Agreement, we have Sarawak rights. For example, official language, education, religious freedom, immigration autonomy, etc. Over the past 60 years, gradually the federal government took away the privileges and rights from Sarawak.

“The Sarawak government is now working hard to reinstate all those rights that belong to Sarawak. The struggle is certainly not an easy task. I appeal to all Sarawakians to unite closely with the Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg and our leaders especially on the oil and gas royalty,” he added.
