-

BINTULU: The social media is a good platform for knowledgesharing but if used for other unhealthy purposes, the impact could be damaging to society.

In this respect, Welfare Department Bintulu officer Taddy Ajin acknowledges the challenges faced by today’s parents in ensuring that their children would not be easily influenced by the negative elements spread via cyberspace.

He stresses that the onus is upon the parents’ shoulders to set some guidelines and limitations for their children when it comes to them surfing the Internet.

“Parents must play their roles effectively to ensure that their children would not be influenced by the negative elements from social media,” he spoke at the closing of the ‘Family Psy- Care’ programme in a hotel here yesterday.

The programme was run by Welfare Department (JKM) Sarawak in collaboration with several local agencies and nongovernmental (NGOs).

On ‘ Family Psy- Care’, Taddy regarded it as a very good programme in that it provided both parents and children exposure to various social issues affecting the society, with a focus on social media and the accompanying challenges.

The programme gathered 85 participants comprising members of Bintulu Children’s Activity Centre and children from Desa Damai housing area. organisations
