KUCHING: Dog owners must make greater effort to ensure that their animals are not out roaming in public areas, especially when rabies is still a concern.

Hui Sing Penrissen Village Safety and Development Committee chairman Kapitan Cheong Ek Boh told thesundaypost that there are council by-laws stating that dogs should remain within the compound of their homes.

“Even if they are vaccinated against rabies, they should not be allowed to roam,” he said, reminding that the relevant councils will have every right to catch such dogs and take them away.

Cheong said that he does not want to see the situation get out of control, especially when there was already a case nearby where somebody’s pet dog tested positive for rabies.

Yesterday morning, the Hui Sing Community Hall was busy with volunteers from SSPCA and the Hui Sing Garden Community Welfare Association assisting dog owners in getting their pets registered and vaccinated.

The Anti-Rabies Spot Vaccination, organised by the Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) and Sarawak Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SSPCA), also took place at Sungai Apong Basketball Court and at Lorong 4A2, Stutong Baru.
