SIBU: The municipal council will provide portable toilets at cemeteries upon request, particularly during Ching Ming Festival (Chinese Tomb Festival), as opposed to constructing a permanent structure.

Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) chairman Datuk Tiong Thai King said apart from worries of vandalism, the council feels that permanent toilets would be under-utilised during non-festival periods.

“Vandalism is not uncommon in Sibu, especially if such facilities are left unguarded.

“However, SMC will provide mobile toilets upon application during festivals such as Ching Ming when there are a lot of people,” he said during the installation ceremony of Sibu United Chinese Graveyard Association (Sucga) for the year 2018-2019.

The ceremony on Friday saw Councillor Teo Boon Siew installed as Sucga president, taking over from Hu Yu Siong.

Teo, meanwhile, said funds are needed to upgrade roads and carparks at cemeteries here for the convenience of the people.

He said since Sucga’s formation, it has placed top priority on cleanliness and beautification programmes for cemeteries.

He also said there will come a time when, due to limited land, local folks will have accept cremation over burial such as what is being practised in Singapore and China.
