Suggestion to include body building competition in ministry’s major events

KUCHING: Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian will consider the suggestion of including body building competitions in major events under the ministry like city festivals, food fairs, cultural exhibitions and the like.

Dr Sim said that the suggestion mooted by Sarawak Bodybuilding Association (SBBA) president Dato Wee Hong Seng is a good one to provide opportunity and platform for the sport to prosper.

“Holding body building competitions will help the sport progress and uncover new talents and enable bodybuilders to network,” he said at the launching of the 5th Mr Boulevard and Mr BBS Bodybuilding and Physique competition held at the new wing of Boulevard Shopping Mall yesterday.

He added that the sports needs discipline, dedication and funding as it is not a cheap sport which involves a lot of science.

The competition which was held as part of Boulevard Shopping Mall Kuching’s annual ‘Health Week’ campaign saw 36 competitors from all over Malaysia vying for titles across four categories: Athletic Physique Under- and Above-170cm, and Bodybuilding Under- and Above70kg. The main sponsor was Borneo Bodybuilding Supplement (BBS).

Earlier, Wee gave an example of Mr Benak, a bodybuilding event which is part of the annual Benak Festival in Sri Aman next weekend.

“We, at SBBA, have the experience and expertise to host such competitions and I believe we have the participation. What we really need are sponsorships and funding to run them. I hope Yang Berhormat Datuk Dr Sim would consider this suggestion,” said Wee in his speech.

Wee said Sarawak bodybuilding contingent will take part in 49th Mr Malaysia Bodybuilding Championships from Aug 17 to 19 in Melaka, with more events happening in Sarawak till the end of this year. He also thanked Boulevard for their support all these years.
