MCC urged to lower parking rates

-

MIRI: A suggestion has been put forward for Miri City Council (MCC) to lower parking rates to ease the financial burden of Mirians.

“As the contract between MCC and Miri Parking System (MPS) will end by December, I would like to suggest they consider lowering parking rates as a way to help the people,” said Piasau assemblyman Datuk Sebastian Ting.

He also suggested MCC change some of the commercial centres from blue to green zone as it would be more convenient and economical for drivers.

Currently, the blue zone is RM0.40 per half an hour and RM1.60 for two hours (for blue coupon), while it is RM0.40 per hour and RM 1.60 for four hours (green coupon).

As for parking compound, Ting hoped the council would retain the discount for early payment to encourage people to pay off their compound.

“People make mistakes, whether intentionally or not. Giving them the grace period of two weeks to pay off their compounds with discount is highly encouraged so that they would pay up,” he said.

Since MPS took over the parking system five years ago, Ting said it has largely eased the workload of the city council which only manages the parking compound.

“Whatever the city council plans to do next, it is best to put the people’s interest first before profit,” he concluded.
