60 Foochow elders to receive ‘Appreciation Ang Pow’

-

KAPIT: Sixty Foochow elders aged 70 and above who are members of the Kapit Foochow Association or members’ parents will receive ‘Appreciation Ang Pow’ from the association on Aug 17 at a dinner gathering to be held at the Civic Centre here.

Association chairman Sii Bang Ee said the event slated to begin at 6.30pm is held in conjunction with the association’s 90th anniversary celebration.

Of the 60 recipients, 57 who are 70 to 90 years old, will receive cash while the other three who are over 90 years old, will be presented with a gold plaque. All recipients have been invited to the dinner in order to collect the angpow themselves.

The main sponsor of the angpow is one of the association advisers, Ling Kock Chong, the owner of Bahagia Express.

Sii meanwhile said that the grand anniversary dinner will be held on Aug 18 commencing from 6.30pm. He added that some 300 Foochow dignitaries throughout the country have confirmed their attendance. A total of 600 Foochow members are expected to attend the dinner.

In conjunction with the anniversary celebration, the association has published a souvenir magazine to record the history and achievements of the Foochow community in Kapit over the past 90 years. Initially when they came from China, they were mostly peasants who settled in the countryside to plant rubber and pepper. Today, members of the community are mainly involved in business.
