Track cycling on the menu for 19th Sukma

IPOH: Track cycling events will be competed at the 2018 Malaysia Games ( Sukma) next month after Velodrome Rakyat here has been officially approved by the Internatio­nal Cycling Union ( UCI).

St ate Yout h and Spor t s Developmen­t C ommi t t e e chairman Howard Lee Chuan How said the events would be reinstated after UCI declared that the refurbishe­d velodrome is safe to use.

Lee, who received the certificat­e said all members of the State Executive Counci l gave the green light for the events to be reinstated.

“The tracks in the velodrome had been refurnishe­d and repaired. I am happy and hope that the track cycling events here at Velodrome Rakyat will be among the best in Sukma’s history,” he told reporters outside the State Legislativ­e Assembly yesterday.

Cycling Federation ( MNCF) vicepresid­ent Datuk Amarjit Singh Gill was reported as saying that he went to Switzerlan­d to obtain the UCI certificat­e after the union had fulfilled the requiremen­ts needed for the homologati­on. On June 5, Lee announced that track cycling events would be dropped from 2018 Sukma as Velodrome Rakyat was not safe for use.

Meanwhile, Lee said Perak would be the first contingent to undergo pre- doping test to ensure their athletes are clean and free from banned substances.

“The pre- doping tests will be conducted on selected athletes representi­ng the state in Sukma, and if they were found positive for any banned substances they would be automatica­lly dropped,” he said.

All 39 venues of the 19th Sukma in Perak from Sept 11 to 22 are equipped with facilities to carry out doping test randomly during the Games.
