Nine teams sign up for Sarawak Open Kabaddi Championsh­ip

KUCHING: Nine teams have confirmed their participat­ion in the 3rd Sarawak Open Kabaddi Championsh­ip at the MBKS Indoor Stadium in Pending tomorrow.

The competitio­n was jointly organised by the Sarawak Kabaddi Associatio­n, the Sarawak Sports Corporatio­n and the Sarawak State Sports Council.

Sarawak head coach Ganisan Punisamy said Federal Terrority of Kuala Lumpur would be sending one boys and one girls team each while Johor will be represente­d by their boys team.

“As for Sarawak, we have the A team made up of seniors and the B team comprising juniors for the boys while it is the same for the girls with Sarawak A and Sarawak B.

“For the time being, there are six teams in the boys competitio­n namely Federal Terrority of Kuala Lumpur, Johor, Sarawak A, Sarawak B, Young Predator, Kuching Stal lions whi le the teams in the girls competitio­n are Federal Terrority of Kuala Lumpur, Sarawak A and Sarawak B,” said Ganisan.

According to him, the Federal Terrority of Kuala Lumpur boys team would comprise junior and senior players as most of their seniors are now undergoing centralise­d training with the national squad in preparatio­n for the Asian Games in Indonesia this month.

“Invitation­s were sent to all states but other teams are not coming due to lack of support from their respective sports councils.

“The organisers have also invited school teams such as SMK Matang Jaya, SMK Green Road, SM Agama Tunas, Sekolah Menengah Seni and SMK St Teresa who have yet to confirm their participat­ion as August 11 is a replacemen­t school day,” added Ganisan.

Competitio­n format is double knock- out for boys and round robin for girls.

Kabaddi enthusiast­s a re welcome to watch the games at MBKS Stadium where entry is free.
