Miri honoured to host Curtin offshore campus — Mayor

MIRI: Miri is honoured to be chosen as the first offshore campus of Western Australia’s Curtin University of Technology.

Since its establishment in 1999, Curtin Malaysia has become one of tools for the city to promote tourism via education.

“Besides local students, the university also has many foreign students from various countries including Brunei,” Mayor Adam Yii told reporters after receiving a courtesy call from Curtin Malaysia’s management team at the Miri City Council ( MCC) Chamber here yesterday.

Yii added that MCC would continue to work closely with the university across all aspects, especially development.

Curtin Malaysia deputy pro vice- chancellor Prof Beena Giridharan and its chief operating officer Peter Willem Pottas led the team in paying a courtesy call on Yii.

The main objective of the visit was to update the mayor and his councillors on the university’s upcoming community event, the ‘Curtin Malaysia Carnival 2018’.

Curtin Malaysia, the carnival themed ‘ Discover, Experience, Interact’ would be held at the campus in Senadin here this Aug 25, running from 10am to 5pm.

Formerly known as ‘Curtin Malaysia Open Day’, the upcoming event will be the campus’ 12th carnival this year, leading up to the university’s 20th anniversary celebration next year.

The carnival will offer visitors fun, hands- on learning experiences in a festival-like atmosphere.

“Visitors would also be able to have an opportunity to explore the university campus, get more information on courses provided by the university, and to talk directly with the lectures and students,” said Curtin Malaysia.

Key attractions of the carnival are ‘Future Students Hub’, faculty showcases, an exhibition on science-technology- engineeringmathematics ( STEM), ‘Curtin’s Croc Challenge’, inter- school competitions, live entertainments, as well as food and beverage and activity stalls.

There will also be a mini kite festival to attract visitors, run in collaboration with Bintulu Development Authority as a prelude to the 14th Borneo International Kite Festival to be held in Bintulu next month.
