DTTG welcomes death sentence, unhappy with acquittal of 3

-

MIRI: The death sentence imposed by the High Court here yesterday on Mohamad Fitri Pauzi, 31, after he was found guilty for the murder of land activist and Parti Keadilan Rakyat ( PKR) Miri branch secretary Bill Kayong in 2016 has brought a sense of relief to Bill’s family members and supporters.

However, they see the verdict as just a small part of the huge task which is to capture the mastermind behind the slaying of Bill which took place at the traffic light junction of Emart Tudan, Jalan Kuala Baram Bypass here on June 21, 2016.

The Dayak Think Tank Group ( DTTG) had expressed dissatisfaction over High Court’s Judge Ravintharan N Paramaguru’s decision to release three other accused – Lie Chang Loon, Chin Wei Chung and Datuk Stephen Lee Chee Kiang and acquitted them from the charge of being accomplices in the murder.

“The High Court’s decision to release the three who were previously suspected of involvement in the murder of Bill Kayong had caused anger and dissatisfaction among many parties who claimed the decision was ridiculous and a joke.

“The decision brought a worrying question. Who is responsible for masterminding the murder? The people of Sarawak want to know the answer to this question,” DTTG founder Wellie Henry Majang told The Borneo Post yesterday.

He called on the authorities to bring the mastermind behind the murder of Bill Kayong to justice in order to solve the murder case.

“Many people believed that Bill Kayong was murdered because he dared speak out to defend the rights of Sarawakians whose land were being trespassed and seized. His passing is a great loss as he had fought for the rights of the indigenous people,” said Wellie.

Wellie said DTTG is indebted to Bill and that his efforts would never go to waste as he had been an inspiration for them to make the dream of fellow Sarawakians become a reality.

“Bill Kayong paid the ultimate price with his life for the rights of the people of Sarawak and we are sure he would be with us today, fighting for PMPG issues if he was not murdered,” he added.
