Govt urged to give land lots to couples living with parents
KUCHING: The government is urged to give land lots to married couples with families, especially those still living with their parents in traditional villages throughout Sarawak.
Jemoreng assemblyman Datuk Dr Juanda Jaya, in suggesting this, said this is also due to traditional villages getting more populated by each day.
He also said the move would enable more Sarawakians living in traditional villages to build their own houses.
“I have mentioned this three times in the State Legislative Assembly ( DUN) – about the need of every married Sarawakian, especially those living in traditional villages, to be given land lots to build their own houses,” he said when contacted yesterday.
Juanda added that the granting of land lots was once implemented during the time of former chief minister, the late Tun Abdul Rahman Ya’akub.
He cited Kampung Gita and Kampung Malaysia Jaya as examples of a successful village extension scheme.
“This should be continued and replicated elsewhere. As I mentioned in the previous DUN meeting, a small piece of land can be divided into four family lots.”
Juanda added that Sarawak is the largest region in Malaysia and as such, land is not much of a problem should the government want to give some to the landless people.
“The land belongs to Sarawakians. If nobody speaks about it, then not many people, especially the new generation, would be able to own land to build their own house upon,” he added.
