Penang student wins RM20,000 gold award at art competition
KUCHING: Lee Ling Feng from Penang has won the RM20,000 gold award at The One Academy Malaysia Top 10 Outstanding Young Artists Awards 2018.
The nationwide art competition came to a close on July 21 in Kuala Lumpur.
The RM1,000 silver award went to Johor’s Yap Jia Le, while the RM1,000 bronze award went to Ng Yan Lei from Kuala Lumpur.
The top three winners also received scholarships totalling RM180,000 from The One Academy.
Seven other award winners each received RM25,000 in scholarships, RM1,000, and certificates of excellence.
A press release said the competition began in May with thousands of hopeful young artists.
Selected contestants attended competitions in Johor Bahru, Batu Pahat, Kota Bharu, Sibu, Kuching, Miri, Georgetown, Tawau, Kota Kinabalu, Ipoh, and Bandar Sunway.
The annual awards are run in collaboration with Pixar Animation Studios.
The One Academy also held its Digital Art and Creative Design Expo of impressive masterpieces from the diverse creative industry and works of graduates.
“Creative education plays an important part in ensuring an individual develops wholesomely in line with the mission of the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development to integrate the perspectives of women and society into the mainstream of national development,” said Deputy Minister of Women, Family and Community Development Hannah Yeoh Tseow Suan, who officiated at the awards ceremony.
“We are now in the era of creative economy which sees to various sectors such as interactive media, social media, computer and mobile games, 3D animation, film visual effects and more. It can be said that the creative industry has even transcended other giant industries. As such, there is now a need for creative educators to keep up and meet the demands of this fast- growing industry by producing talents.”
The Distinguished Art Educator Awards went to teachers who helped nurture the Top 10 winners.
The Art Educator Lifetime Achievement Award went to Koh Ping Yap from Kluang Chong Hwa High School, who has taught art for 29 years, during which he received numerous accolades and awards.
The One Academy Penang managing director Leong Hoy Yoke was also conferred the award for his hard work and contribution to the art industry for 20 years.
The awards ceremony also celebrated 10 inspiring individuals, who have taken the creative industry by storm since graduating from The One Academy.
They were Machineast Pte Ltd co-founder and designer Dayang Nur Afizah, Mossery CEO Lim Jun Yuen, The One Academy Art and Certificate Course head Khoo Boon Tiong, Mode Interior Style founder and creative director Charles Loke Chee Kin, Tau Films assistant 2D supervisor Steve Chong Tek Loong, The One Academy Fine Arts Department deputy head Koh Cheng Kuan, DS Space Design Studio senior designer Theo Loi Fui Teng, Blinkware Technology chief creative officer Ng Wei Ling, Lemon Sky production manager Kevin Lai Han Wen, and MPC Films environmental technical director Phang Jin Jo.
To date, over RM16.2 million worth of scholarships have been presented to talented individuals nationwide.
Those interested in the creative industry can pursue their studies at The One Academy, which nurture students through its ‘Masters Train Masters’ coaching in diploma and degree courses in Advertising and Graphic Design, Interior Architecture and Design, Digital Animation with Game Development, Digital Media Design, Illustration, Movie and Game Art, Film Visual Effects, Fine Arts, and Esmod Fashion Design and Pattern Making.
