Wholesale, retail trade sales value up 9.6 pct to RM106.1 billion

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s wholesale and retail trade sales value increased 9.6 per cent yearon-year (y-o-y) in June 2018 to RM106.1 billion, said the Department of Statistics.

In a statement yesterday, Chief Statistici­an Datuk Seri Dr. Mohd Uzir Mahidin said the expansion was supported by growth in retail trade and motor vehicles at 12.1 per cent 10.1 per cent, respective­ly.

“The higher sales value was boosted by the zero-rated Goods and Services Tax which took effect starting June 1, 2018, the Hari Raya festive period and the Mega Sale Carnival held from June 1-30 this year,” he said.

in June 2018 remained positive, recording a 2.3 per cent growth compared with the preceding month, despite the negative growth of 0.3 per cent in wholesale trade.

“This decrease was mitigated by growth in the motor vehicles and retail trade sub-sectors which grew 5.8 per cent and 4.5 per cent, respective­ly, during the same period,” he said.

For the second quarter of 2018 (Q2 2018), the volume index of wholesale and retail trade expanded 7.0 per cent to 166.5 points compared with Q2 2017.

He said the growth was driven by the 8.1 per cent expansion in retail trade, while wholesale trade and motor vehicles increased by 6.9 per cent and 3.5 per cent, respective­ly. — Bernama
