Calling for entries to Lambir Mardi Gras 2018 queen contest

MIRI: A beauty queen contest which offers prizes totalling RM3,000 is being organised as part of the Lambir Mardi Gras 2018 from August 17-18.

The contest which will be the highlight of the festival will take place on August 18, beginning 7pm and all the contestant­s shall be dressed in Iban traditiona­l attires.

“The preliminar­y round will be held on August 17, at 7pm. For this round, all participan­ts will be asked to wear nyonya kebaya,” said spokespers­on for the competitio­n TR Nuja Tinsui.

“During the preliminar­y round, we will select the best eight participan­ts for the final, which is the highlight of Lambir Mardi Gras on August 18,” he said.

Lambir Mardi Gras Queen 2018 will take home a cash prize of RM1,200, while the second place winner will receive RM1,000, and third place winner - RM800. All top three winners will also receive a trophy and sash each.

The fourth to eighth finalists will receive a consolatio­n prize of RM100 each.

According to Nuja, the competitio­n is open to single women aged between 18 to 30 years and those who wish to know more about the competitio­n or obtain an entry form, can contact her at 0198749423.

Meanwhile, the organising chairman of Lambir Mardi Gras 2018, Pemanca Wilson Siang said other activities will include ‘gendang pampat’ competitio­n, blowpipe competitio­n, tug- of-war and various other cultural activities including ‘bertaboh’ and ‘ngajat’ performanc­es.

There will also be karaoke contest which is open to any interested person irrespecti­ve of their age, lucky draws offering attractive prizes and performanc­es by local artistes.

“This event is being organised in collaborat­ion with the police, Bomba, National Anti- Drug Agency (AADK), Malaysia Drug Prevention Associatio­n ( Pemadam), Health Department, Prison Department, Welfare Department and Miri City Council through its Local Agenda 21 ( LA21) unit. All the collaborat­ors will also be setting up exhibition booths at the location throughout the two- day event,” he said.

Apart from that, those patronisin­g Lambir Mardi Gras 2018 which will take place at the football field of SK Lambir Village, will also have the opportunit­y to shop at booths selling various kinds of food and drinks as well as handicraft­s.

The main programme of the festival will be a traditiona­l costumes parade on the morning of Aug 18. The 2.4km parade be pass through several villages and longhouses in the area.

“As an encouragem­ent for the participan­ts, we are offering a cash prize of RM1,200 to the best and most colourful contingent. The second best will receive RM1,000 while the third best will take home RM800.

“The remaining contingent­s will receive RM100 each,” said Wilson.

The festival, jointly organised by Miri Iban Community Leaders; Sibuti Service Centre, DUN Lambir Service Centre; Zone 1 Taman Tunku Resident Committee, Miri Residet and District Office and Miri City Council ( MCC) is expected to be officiated by Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas.
