Over 930 pupils take part in interprimary school sports meet
SIBU: Over 936 pupils from 30 primary schools here took part in the two- day inter-primary school annual sports meet at Tun Ahmad Zaidi Stadium here yesterday morning.
SJK Thai Kwang was the organiser of this year’s event with the school’s board of management chairman Datuk Tiong Thai King officiating at the opening ceremony..
Tiong speaking at the event said sports have a positive influence on societal development and quoting former South African leader Nelson Mandela, Tiong said ‘Sports can change the world’.
He added: “Engagement in sports is an excellent way to bring people together in a relaxed environment that will build lasting network and friendships.
“It’s a platform to foster unity in a multi-racial society.”
Sports, he said, play an important role in the provision of a holistic education, ensuring a balance between academic performance and personal development.
“Here, you find opportunity to learn to be empathetic and compassionate towards others,” he said, adding that engagement in sports helps to keep you fit and healthy.
“You learn about team spirit, which will stand you in good stead when you enter the workforce in the near future,” Tiong added.
Also present were representative from Divisional Education Office Kong Chiong Hui and headmistress of SJK Thai Kwang Sio Siok Hie.
