SMK Limbang duo win bronze award at maths competition
LIMBANG: Two SMK Limbang students recently brought honours to Limbang after winning a bronze award at the Asia International Mathematical Olympiad 2018 (AIMO) held at Thailand Chamber of Commerce University.
The students Chieng Fong Ling and Ferdie Lim Xhen Huang were accompanied by teacher Teng Chin Ling at the Aug 4 competition.
According to Teng, the achievement was the result of support from the school, its Parents-Teachers Association, the government and other associations.
Teng also thanked community leader Temenggong Ang Kheng Su for helping to seek RM10,000 financial aid from Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan which made it possible for the students to take part in the AIMO 2018 competition held in Bangkok and Pattaya, Thailand.
AIMO is an annual international Olympiad competition originated from Hong Kong, and has been organised by the Asia International Mathematical Olympiad Union since 2012.
It provides a platform for students to improve critical thinking skills and exchange knowledge and to promote educational and cultural development.
This year’s event saw 13 countries taking part comprising Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, Kazakhstan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, China, Macau, South Korea, Bulgaria and Myanmar.
The competition is open to students in Year/Standard 3 to A levels/STPM, who had won the Gold, Silver and Bronze (Individual Category) in Singapore and the Asian School of Mathematical Olympics (SASMO).
