Man jailed three months, fined for selling senior citizen’s goats

MIRI: The Batu Niah magistrate’s court near here yesterday imposed a three months’ jail and RM3,500 fine on a man after he pleaded guilty to selling two goats belonging to a senior citizen.

Mohd Nasriq Mat was charged under Section 414 of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of up to seven years or fine or both upon conviction.

Based on facts of the case, the accused was found to have intentiona­lly transferre­d properties that did not belong to him by selling the two goats belonging to Madihi Mok, 68, to a foreigner Tangsi Karaeng Lalang for RM150.

He committed the offence at 8am on Aug 9 at the Sepupok Bridge in Niah.

ASP Mary Ong prosecuted the case in front of Magistrate Zurani Ali Musa while the accused was not represente­d.

In an unrelated case, a man who lodged a false report at the Batu Niah police station was fined RM1,000 in default three weeks’ jail by the same court yesterday.

Kong Chiong Yu was said to have made a police report claiming that the money which belonged to the company he worked for which was under his care was missing when it had allegedly been used by him in a football betting.

Magistrate Zuraini passed the sentence after considerin­g several factors including the accused’s guilty plea and appeal, facts of the case, the seriousnes­s of the offence as well as public interest.

Kong was charged under Section 182 of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of up to six months or fine up to RM2,000 or both upon conviction.

Based on facts of the case, the accused made a false police report to Lance Corporal Norashida Ahmad claiming that RM16,000 kept in a car which was park in front of Batu Niah Food Court had gone missing. The accused committed the offence at 12.35pm on July 9.

He had allegedly used the money to pay up a football bet which he had lost.

ASP Mary Ong prosecuted the case while Kong who was not represente­d. The accused had pleaded for leniency saying that he regretted his action and will repay the company’s money in installmen­ts.
