Man fined, jailed for intimidati­ng his father

MIRI: A man was sentenced to two months’ jail and fined RM3,800 by the Batu Niah magistrate’s court yesterday for criminally intimidati­ng his father.

Magistrate Zuraini Ali Musa passed the sentence after the accused, Mathew Reagan Empaga, pleaded guilty to the charge read under Section 506 of the Penal Code.

Based on facts of the case, Mathew threatened his father, Empaga Ipeh, 56, using a baseball bat at 8pm on Aug 10 in front of Rumah Derit, Sg Lembong, Suai, Niah.

He pleaded for leniency saying it was his first offence.

ASP Mary Ong prosecuted while Mathew was not represente­d.

In an unrelated case, a man pleaded guilty to causing hurt to his 18-year- old wife.

The court however fixed Sept 19 to hear his probationa­l report to be prepared by the Welfare Dept since the offender, Muhd Nurfiqri Jasni, is still young,

Until then, he was released on RM3,000- bail with his father as surety.

Based on facts of the case, Nurfiqri had voluntary caused grievious hurt to his wife, Nur Syahida Mansur Abdullah, using a knife at 12.30am on June 30, at a plantation workers’ quarters in KM55, Miri-Bintulu road.

He was charged under Section 324 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 362A of the same Code.

Section 324 of the Penal Code provides for a jail term up to 10 years, or fine or whipping or any two upon conviction, while Section 326A provides for twice the maximum punishment on conviction.

ASP Mary Ong prosecuted while the accused was unrepresen­ted.
