MIRI: Association of Parents with Special Children ( Pibakis) Miri requires continual support to finance the operation of community-based rehabilitation ( PDK) centre in Lutong.

President of Piabkis Miri Chiam Yun Chaw said many people confuse Pibakis Miri with PDK Miri.

“Pibakis Miri is a nongovernmental organisation (NGO) and also non-profit.

“Our objectives are to look after and cater for the welfare, health, wellbeing and future of special children.

“Whereas PDK Miri is under the welfare department and was formerly housed in Shell quarters at Piasau Camp,” he said yesterday.

He added that when the house was unable to accommodate the increasing number of special children, Pibakis Miri initiated the construction of a proper building to run PDK programme.

Last year the building owned by Miri was completed and housed children from PDK Miri.

“It is true that PDK Miri is under the Welfare Department. However, the operation cost for the building is financed by the association.

“In appreciation for the teachers’ contribution, the association took the initiative to top up the allowance given by the government to the teachers.”

In conjunction with the upcoming Pibakis Charity Run 2018 on Sept 16, the centre will also hold an open day for the members of public.

“The centre in Lutong is chosen as the starting point so the public will know that this building has been serving the operation of PDK Miri,” added Chiam.

Handicraft products made by special children will be on sale with the profits channelled to the centre.

On the run, he said registration has been closed with overwhelming response.

“Over 800 runners have confirmed their participation for the run which will flag off at 6.15am,” he said.

There will be seven categories in the run- Men’s Open, Women’s Open, Men’s Veteran, Women’s Veteran, Family which will be 12KM and Kid-Boys, Family KidGirls and Fun Run which will be 4KM.

Cash prizes for the top 10 winners in all categories will be RM300 for first placing followed by RM200 (second), RM100 (third), RM80 (fourth) and RM50 each for winners in 5th to 10th position.

All winners will receive a medal each.
