-

KUALA LUMPUR: A security guard was sentenced to 18 months’ jail yesterday for possessing 13 terror- related videos in his mobile phone last February.

High Court judge Datuk Azman Abdullah meted out the sentence against Mohd Zaki Ibrahim after he pleaded guilty.

“I regret it... I really regret doing it (the offence). I’d like to request (for a lenient sentence), I have diabetes, hypertension, and Parkinson’s (disease). I also have dependents, ( and) a child who is disabled,” said Mohd Zaki, who was trembling before the sentence was passed.

Judge Azman said the act of storing terror-related videos was a serious offence as it could affect other individuals, and hoped that the accused would no longer commit any acts which would make him a criminal.

The court ordered the accused to undergo the sentence from the date he was arrested on Feb 27.

The accused was alleged to have possessed 12 videos linked to the terrorist group Daesh and one video related to terrorist group Jund Al-Aqsa, on his mobile phone and tablet.

Mohd Zaki committed the offence at the guard house of Tenaga Nasional Berhad’s PPU Substation at Jalan Permas 3/4, Bandar Baru Permas Jaya, Masai, Johor Bahru, Johor, at 12.30 pm on Feb 27.

He was charged under Section 130JB (1) ( a) of the Penal Code which is punishable under subsection 130JB (1) of the same Act, carrying a maximum jail sentence of seven years or fine, and also liable to forfeiture of any item seized.

Meanwhile, in the same court, two colleagues pleaded not guilty to mutual intent to commit a terrorist act, that is to attack a building addressed at No. 1, Jalan Abu Bakar, Johor Bahru, Johor, and to achieve this common intention, involving themselves to prepare for the attack.

Technician Nik Muhamad Zaini Nik Hassan, 37, and security guard Ismadi Md Nor @ Ismail, 30, allegedly committed the offence at Seri Tomyam, Majidee Corner, Jalan Kemboja, Kampung Dato’ Sulaiman Menteri, Johor, between Dec 11, 2017, and Jan 31, 2018.

They were charged under Subsection 130JD (1) of the Penal Code read together with Section 34 of the same Act which provides maximum imprisonment of seven years and fine, upon conviction.
