Khim Wen lands Malaysia’s first medal

JAKARTA: National taekwondo exponent, Yap Khim Wen has become the first athlete to deliver a medal at the 2018 JakartaPal­embang Asian Games for the country after bagging a bronze medal in the women’s individual poomsae event yesterday.

The success also ended a 16-year wait for the national taekwondo camp in the Asian Games after Lee Pei Fen/ Lee Wan Yuen won a bronze medal in the women’s kyorugi event in the 2002 edition in Busan, South Korea.

Khim Wen shared the bronze medal with South Korea’s Yun Jihye who also lost in the semifinals.

The event held at Jakarta Convention Centre ( JCC), saw a determined Khim Wen lost to Salahshour­i Marjan of Iran in the semi-final.

Khim Wen collected 8.30 points while Marjan scored 8.43 points to face host exponent Def ia Rosmaniar in the final.

Earlier, the 24-year- old athlete from Selangor easily beat Huda Akbar of Bahrain in the first round before overcoming China’s Ji Yuhan in the quarter-finals.

Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman is elated that the Malaysian contingent has won its first medal via a taekwondo exponent.

He said he was most pleasantly surprised by the bronze medal victory by Yap Khim Wen in the women’s individual poomsae event when she progressed to the semi-finals.

He was speaking to reporters after visiting the Malaysian contingent at the Games Village in Kemayoran here yesterday.

Earlier, he assured national athletes competing in the 2018 Jakar ta- Palembang Asian Games over the hazy conditions in Indonesia now.

Syed Saddiq said the National Sports Council, Olympic Council of Malaysia and the National Sports Institute have taken the necessary measures to ensure athletes are in the best condition for the Asian Games.

“So far, I understand the condition is under control, and the athletes are not facing any problems,” he said.

the Indonesian Asian Games Organising Committee ( Inasgoc) to national athletes especially the facilities provided at the Games Village. In this regard, Syed Saddiq believed the national contingent was capable of achieving better results in the ongoing Asian Games.
