Urban poor family latest to receive aid from Lim and friends

-

KUCHING: An urban poor family at Ellis Road was the latest recipient of contributions from a group of Good Samaritans brought together by volunteer social worker Lim Chee Haw.

The contribution of rice, sugar and other food items was handed over by Lim to the family’s matriarch Salmah Abdullah yesterday.

Lim said it was the first time the group has reached out to this family after being informed of the family’s predicament.

He explained that Salmah’s family of seven is living in a dilapidated house, and that she has to care for her stroke-afflicted husband and a physically disabled daughter without having a stable income.

“Having lived through poverty and hardship during my younger years, I understand their predicament and this is why I will continue to reach out to the poor and needy irrespective whether they are in urban or rural areas.

“I thank all those who have responded to my request to help those in need, irrespective of race or religious background,” said Lim, a retired Marine Police personnel now devoted to charity work. He thanked a Mr Law and family from Foochow Road No 2, Fook Lai Construction in MJC Batu Kawa, a Mr Hii and Mr Chia from Jalan Matang as well as others for their assistance in this latest charity act.

On a related matter, Lim said he can be contacted on 082-248153 or 016- 8070388 for assistance to poor families who require coffins for the funeral of a departed family member. Lim explained that cash donations from Good Samaritans are ‘parked’ at a coffin shop here to be used whenever a genuine request was received.

A family at Kampung Sadir, Puncak Borneo was the latest to receive such assistance after they needed help to get a coffin for a deceased elderly woman.

He said similar assistance has been rendered to families in Sungai Apong here, Kampung Murud Plaman near Serian, Kampung Sinjog at Mile 18 KuchingSerian Road, Kampung Sabang in Simunjan, Kampung Tanah Merah at Mile 27 Kuching- Serian Road, and Kampung Mantung Marau in Serian.

“The donors may have done this out of an old Chinese belief that this could reverse their bad fortune, such as to revive or boost their business. Nonetheless, buying coffins for others is also a commendable act especially in the charity and welfare aspect,” he said.
