Sang Voyage secures spot in opening act for jazz festival
KUCHING: Ethnic- fusion jazz band Sang Voyage won the Kuching Waterfront Jazz Band Search talent competition here on Saturday.
Held at the Waterfront Godown Amphiteatre, the competition saw four shortlisted local bands perform jazz numbers to a panel of judges in a bid to win a place as part of the opening act for this year’s much anticipated Kuching Waterfront Jazz Festival ( KWJF) happening next month.
The four finalists were The Voglers, Swaiv, Sang Voyage and QCH Band.
Apart from getting to perform at the KWJF, Sang Voyage also received a cash prize of RM1,500 and KWJF festival tickets.
KWJF creator and organiser Soedirman Aini, who is also Sarawak Economic Development Corporation ( SEDC) general manager, said the competition aimed to nurture and inspire local and new jazz talents.
“As there are not many jazz bands in Sarawak, we want to support these few bands and also motivate aspiring musicians to explore jazz music. We also hope that KWJF will be a stepping stone for Sang Voyage to further amplify and reach their musical aspirations,” he said.
KWJF is set to happen on Sept 28 and 29 this year at Grand Margherita Hotel after a highly successful installment last year.
Soedirman also commented that this year’s KWJF will feature a bigger star- studded lineup, including multi- award winning Sarawakian songstress Dayang Nurfaizah, Ito and the Blues Gang, Aisyah Aziz from Singapore, Aditya from Indonesia, Carmen Souza from Portugal, The Natalie Gillispie Band from Australia and many others.
