SIBU: Three bronze plaques believed to worth several thousand ringgit were found missing from the Vui Neng Garden in Upper Lanang Road here.

According to Grand Heights Neighbourhood Committee chairman Tiong Chong Ting, the suspected theft was discovered on Aug 14.

The biggest of the three, which measures four feet by six feet, carries the names of benefactors who have contributed financially to the construction of the garden in 2002.

The two smaller plaques display the history of Vui Neng Settlement in Malaysia and the signatory of the official opening of the garden in 2002.

“We have already lodged a police report,” he said adding a few people were alleged to have removed the plaques using high-powered tools in broad daylight.

“But these witnesses did not suspect anything as they thought the people were workers from Sibu Municipal Council doing renovation works.

“They cleaned up the area and loaded the plaques in a lorry,” he said based on an eye-witness account.

Yesterday morning, council chairman Datuk Tiong Thai King, a few policemen from Lanang Road police station led by Sgt Herman Runggah, members of Sarawak Vui Neng Association and Grand Heights Neighbourhood Committee were seen at the site of the suspected theft.
