Experience Orang Ulu’s culture at ‘Makan Makan Sarawak’

KUCHING: The ‘Makan Makan Sarawak’, an Orang Ulu festival will showcase various cultural elements of the Orang Ulu, comprising as many as 23 subethnic groups.

As the first of their annual ‘ Makan Makan’ event of the year, Yayasan Perpaduan Sarawak ( YPS) and Sarawak Developmen­t Institute ( SDI), together with The Champions will be co-hosting ‘Makan Makan Sarawak: Pesta Orang Ulu’ at the Dayak Bidayuh National Associatio­n hall here this Aug 25, from 10am to 10pm.

“As a tribute to the community, the ‘Makan Makan’ event draws its focus to the rich culture that the Orang Ulu community brings to the table,” the organisers said in a press statement issued yesterday.

‘ Makan Makan’ is a cultural culinary-sharing aimed at helping others learn and experience the diverse culture, practices and traditions of the many subgroups within the Orang Ulu community.

The grand dinner – the highlight of every ‘ Makan Makan’ event – will run from 7pm to 10pm that day, serving up a plethora of authentic Orang Ulu cuisines.

“YPS and its partners seek to provide a communal platform for all Sarawakian­s and nonSarawak­ians to learn and understand more about one another’s food culture while fostering stronger cross- cultural understand­ing and acceptance.

“There will be a free cultural exhibition open to the public from 10am to 5pm, featuring food demonstrat­ions, explanatio­ns of cultural practices, and various workshops showcasing the Orang Ulu traditions where guests can participat­e in,” the organisers said.

The collaborat­ive partners for the event are the Ministry of Welfare, Community Well Being,

Women, Family and Childhood Developmen­t, Majlis Adat Istiadat Sarawak, Federation of Orang Ulu Malaysia, Sarawak Cultural Village, Friends of Sarawak Museum and Kuching In & Out, which have been working very closely with the organisers to ensure the authentici­ty and the accuracy of informatio­n shared during the ‘ Makan Makan’ event.
