BETONG: A two-year- old girl was killed in a road accident on Wednesday evening involving a four-wheel drive (4WD) vehicle after the driver was said to have lost control of the vehicle which then plunged into the Babu River in Rimbas near Debak.

The girl’s parents suffered injuries to the face, body and legs.

According to Betong Fire and Rescue Department ( Bomba) operations officer Henry Jugah, they received a call on the accident around 7.45pm.

“A team of firefighters was despatched to the accident scene which is about 30 kilometres from the fire station. The team arrived at the location about 30 minutes later.

“Upon their arrival, they saw a Triton 4WD had plunged into the river which was 25 feet deep. One of the occupants was found still trapped in the vehicle,” Henry said.

“Two other occupants believed to be the father and the girl were already out of the vehicle and later sent to Betong Hospital before the arrival of the firefighters.

“The firefighters managed to free the trapped occupant before transfering her to an ambulance,” he said.

The two-year- old girl identified as Airelyn Acelin Kyla was however pronounced dead on arrival at Betong Hospital.

One of the crash survivors, Mohamad Khairudin Harun, 35, when recalling the final moment before the fatal accident said that he felt a sharp pain in his eyes and thus not able to look at the road ahead before losing control of the vehicle.

The road was also said to be very slippery after a heavy rain at the time of accident.

It was disclosed that the man working as a site engineer for TRC Enterprise, the developer for the Pan Borneo Highway was on the way to Sibu before taking a flight to Kuala Lumpur the next day when the accident happened.
