Mordi to make sure Selampit Bridge project gets under way

-

KUCHING: Mas Gading member of Parliament Mordi Bimol says he will try his level best to help bring about the implementation of the long- delayed proposed Kampung Selampit Bridge project.

He said he had brought up the matter in the last parliament sitting and the answer he got from the Minister of Rural Development Rina Mohd Harun was very promising.

Mordi, who is State DAP Youth chief, said the minister, in a reply to his question, said the Selampit Bridge project in Bau had been approved for implementation under the Second Rolling Plan of the 11th Malaysia Plan with an allocation of RM10 million.

“Parliament was told that the current status of this project is in the design stage.

“It is also in the process of obtaining approval for an additional ceiling cost of RM20 million from the Economic Planning Unit ( EPU),” he said.

He said the ministry had tried to obtain the additional budget following a change in scope of the proposed project – from constructing a 100-metre concrete bridge to constructing a 2.8km road with JKR standard R3 and build a 200-metre concrete bridge with a width of 11 metres.

He said following a change in the scope, the total cost of the project is RM30 million.

Mordi said he would continue to follow up on the project until it is implemented as the bridge would bring great benefits to the people there.

He believes that with a bridge in place, not just the locals but visitors would not need to worry about the low tide or long queues when wanting to cross the river.

The proposed Kampung Selampit Bridge across the Kayan River was promised in 2015 by former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak during an official function at Kampung Setenggang, Bau with an allocation of RM10 million.

The bridge, upon completion, would benefit over 5,000 people in six villages – Kampung Selampit, Kampung Sedaing, Kampung Pasir, Kampung Bukit Batu, Kampung Kenda-ie and Kampung Pasir Hilir.
