SIBU: Performing arts centres will be set up in stages across Sarawak, starting with the conversion of the old state legislative assembly building ( DUN) in Kuching.

Assistant Minister of Tourism, Art and Culture Datuk Lee Kim Shin said this on the sidelines of the press conference on ‘Mamma Mia – The Musical’ here on Saturday night when representing Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg at the event.

“We will start with Kuching before moving on to Sibu and other divisions. Renovation works at the old DUN building will start soon,” he said

The musical organised by Sarawak Arts Council ( MSS) and Sibu Resident Office, was performed by Sarawak State Symphony Orchestra (SONS).

Lee said that the ministry was slowly starting to generate interest in performing arts. We have so many ethnic groups which can be brought together through performing arts and cultural performances.”

Adding on, he said MSS is coming up with a programme to promote performing arts, ethnic dances and choir besides conducting classes.

“Basically, we would like to generate greater interest among Sarawakians in performing arts,” Lee said.

According to Lee, MSS also travelled to other divisions to scout for talents in performing arts.

“Under our ministry – we have SONS which has about 60 musicians in the orchestra and 100 part-time musicians, performers and volunteers.

“So, we would like to build up our orchestra, performing arts and also traditional musical instruments and folklore,” he concluded.

Also present were Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports permanent secretary Hii Chang Kee, MSS chief executive officer (CEO) Sharkawi Amit, Sibu deputy resident Wong Hee Sieng and the performance director Yap Chiew Phin.
