Local contractor’s deed secures home of widow and disabled daughters

-

KUCHING: A widow and her two physically- challenged daughters now have a new fence and window grilles for their house thanks to the generosity of Fook Lai Construction and Development Sdn Bhd.

The company also donated a metal gate to the family who are the first three registered recipients on Hope Place Kuching’s list of needy persons.

The family’s home is located at the fringe of a jungle in Matang and is only accessible by foot from the main road, said Hope Place founder Kelvin Wan yesterday.

According to him, Hope Place has been assisting the family since 2012 and even engaged volunteers to build their house even though the non- governmental organisation was not yet formally established back then.

He said widow Kok Kui Moi, 68, also known as Aunty Foo, and her two daughters experienced a burglary about three weeks ago when an intruder managed to enter their house through one of the windows.

“But the intruder fled without getting away with anything from the house when Aunty Foo screamed for help upon seeing him. The news of the burglary was later published by the media.

“It was easy for the burglar to enter their one-storey house which had no fencing or window grilles,” added Wan.

He revealed that the contractor, upon learning of the news, contacted Hope Place and surprised them by saying he would fully bear the cost to install fencing and window grilles for the house.

“Aunty Foo was overwhelmed with joy knowing that her home is now secured, thanks to the kindhearted contractor. We at Hope Place are also proud to know that among our midst, there are in fact kind-hearted people. We seldom acknowledge the compassion and empathy of these people but it is our hope that their generosity would be emulated by the younger generation,” said Wan.

Hope Place carries out aid deliveries once every three months because of the more than 180 families on its list of recipients.

It can be reached via 013- 5672775 or 082- 505987 from 8.30am to 12pm and 2pm to 5pm ( Mondays to Fridays) and from 9am to 12pm on Saturday.
