Plan to spread, raise profile of floorball in S’wak

MIRI: Floorball, a relatively new sport in Sarawak, has already made an impact in Miri with various tournament­s organized since 2014.

Miri Divisional officer of the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports, Ennie Lukong, said the Ministry plans to introduce the sport throughout Sarawak starting with secondary schools.

“There will be also a discussion to put this sport as a tourist attraction in Miri by inviting overseas teams to compete in the annual tournament,” he added after closing the two- day Miri Floorball Challenge held at Miri Indoor Stadium on Aug 19.

Organisers revealed yesterday that a total of 120 players from ten men and five women’s teams took part.

Participat­ing schools were SMK St. Columba, SMK Baru, SM Pei Min and i- Systems College Miri.

Taman Tunku Floorball Club (i- Systems Miri) won the men’s category beating Vans Royal FT (i- Systems Miri) 1- 0 in a penalty shotout. The 3rd and 4th placing went to SMK St. Columba A and Trivalit MFC (SMK St. Columba) respective­ly

Borneo Pirates emerged as women’s champion after beating SMK St. Columba B 6-1 in the final. The 3rd and 4th placing went to Girl Generation (i- Systems Miri) and SMK St. Columba A respective­ly.

Nicholas Ayum of Team Etosh (i-Systems College) and Lora King of Borneo Pirates were adjudged as best male and female players respective­ly.
