Five local golfers qualify for 24th WAGC in Johor
KUCHING: Five local golfers will play against 400 players from 45 countries after booking their places in the grand final of 24th World Amateur Golfers Championship (WAGC) to be held in Johor from Oct 20-28.
The qualifiers had won in their respective categories in the 8th leg of the qualifying round at Damai Golf and Country Club ( DGCC) over the weekend.
Organising committee chairman Lokman Ishak said the grand final will be held at four courses in Johor namely The ELS Club Desaru Coast (Ocean Course), Palm Resort Golf & Country Club (Cempaka Course), Forest City Golf Resort & Country Club and the Horizon Hills Golf & Country Club.
For the qualifying round at DGCC, a total of 104 participants took part in the five categories and the winners will compete in the grand final with expenses fully paid by organisers.
In the Category A of the competition, Daniel Yeo, who played with handicap 5, won first placing after he carded a nett score of two-under 70 while Johari Aman finished second with four strokes adrift. Finishing in third and fourth placings were Nasrul Iman and Roshan Mustapha.
In Category B, Abang Abdul Rahman, who was playing with handicap 10, was first after he shot a nett score of 73 with Awang Sani Seruji finishing second with one stroke adrift. Awang Zailani and Habib Mustapha were third and fourth.
In Category C, Mohd Nur Aiman, with handicap 15, won first spot with a two-under par 70 on count back (OCB) pipping Choo Tze Chin. Third and fourth were Muqtalkah Omar and Raden Bustari.
Category D saw Wan Saferi Wan Abdullah topping the field with an eight-under par 64 while Barnabas Dickson finished second three strokes adrift. Ending third and fourth were Patrick Nyulam and Othman Junaidi.
Category E was won by Banaie Jaraie, playing with handicap 25, who carded a nett score of 10-under par 62 while Yazid Karim was second nine strokes adrift followed by Abu Kassim Abdul Wahid and Jamaludin Hasim.
