Singing contest to be held Sept 1-2

SIBU: The SM Wong Nai Siong Challenge Cup singing competitio­n will be held from Sept 1-2 for Chinese primary schools and Chinese independen­t secondary schools here.

The event, which offers a host of prizes, is coordinate­d by Sibu Pingnang Tonhiong Associatio­n.

SM Wong Nai Siong board of directors chairman Temenggong Dato Vincent Lau Lee Ming said the preliminar­y round for the primary school category will be held on Sept 1 at the Sibu Foochow Associatio­n premises, starting 8am.

The preliminar­y round for the secondary school category will be at the same venue, starting at 1pm.

Lau disclosed this yesterday during a simple ceremony to hand over prizes for the competitio­n to the organising committee at the KTS office here.

“The finals will be held at RH Hotel here on Sept 2 at 6.30pm. It will be held over dinner to celebrate the 51st anniversar­y of SM Wong Nai Siong,” he added.

Twenty- seven students from nine primary schools and 23 from 10 secondary schools have registered to take part in the competitio­n.

“The school that wins the challenge cup for three consecutiv­e years will get to keep it for good,” Lau said.

Sibu Foochow Associatio­n chairman Wong Sie Yong, contest organising chairman Wong Ching Diak, and anniversar­y dinner organising chairman Kapitan Lau Hieng Wuong were among those present during the handing- over of prizes.
