Skateboard squad comes up empty-handed

-

PALEMBANG: The national skateboard squad has failed to make an impact in the extreme sport which was competed for the first time in 2018 Asian Games Jakarta-Palembang, after failing to challenge other athletes for medal.

In the men’s Street final at SkateBoard Stadium, Jakabaring Sport City here, Yaziru Amiru Basyir Zainordin, 24, ended his campaign in the seventh place with 17.3 overall points.

Yaziru Amiru obtained 4.1 and 3.5 points for two runs in 45 seconds while for five trick attempts, he collected 4.2 and 5.5 points after failing in three attempts and only the points for the best two tricks were counted in the overall points.

The gold medal was won by Japan’s Kayaki Ike who obtained 31.1 overall points while the silver and bronze medals went to Sanggoe Dharma Tanjung ( 30.5) of Indonesia and Juwon Eun (25.4) of South Korea respectively.

Speaking to Bernama after the event, Yaziru Amiru said local skaters have to work harder so as not to be left behind and more so when the sport would be competed in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

“This is a very good exposure for me to go further as I feel we need to improve our skills. Maybe there should be better training facilities and if possible the association should consider overseas training as we need to mix with other athletes so as not to be left behind,” he said.
