Be the best Malaysians you can be, school children encouraged

-

MIRI: All students should strive to become the best Malaysians that they can be – those who will contribute to and determine the nation’s future.

In this respect, Sekolah Agama Rakyat Miri ( SARM) headmistress Fauziah Mokhtar Khan acknowledged that while many of today’s children never experienced first-hand the struggles towards attaining independence, they should uphold the meaning of ‘Merdeka’ (independence).

She advised her charges to always avoid negative matters that would destroy their future and that of their country.

“We are blessed to be living in a peaceful country like Malaysia, and National Day is to celebrate the victory that our forefathers obtained 61 years ago. To show our respect, we must uphold this day and always be grateful for it,” she spoke during the ‘Ambang Merdeka 2018’ celebration at the school yesterday.

The highlight of the event was the ‘ Best National Day-Theme Dress’ competition, which was divided into Boys and Girls categories.

Year 3 pupil Mohd Haiqal Hazlani Amin won the Boys category, with Year 4’s Mohd Qhairie Azmie Suhardi and Year 3’s Mohd Alid Mohd Faizul placed respective second and third.

Year 2 pupil Nur Zhufairah Amrin topped the Girls category, while Year 6’s Nur Syamimi Najwa Suhardi and Year 2’s Bibi Salsabila Saliman took second and third place, respectively.

Prizes were presented by Miri Malay Welfare Trust Board education officer Fairuz Shaida Habibi Abideen.

SARM is the oldest Islamic primary school, where Muslim children from various primary schools across the city are taught Islamic subjects. It also runs co- curricular activities during its afternoon classes.
