BINTULU: More companies from the corporate sector, especially those awarded government contracts, have been asked to adopt schools for the Natural Resources and Environment Board’s (NREB) environmental clubs known as PALS.

Assistant Minister for Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environment Datu Len Talif Salleh said since 2016, only 12 companies have adopted 27 schools with funding totalling RM187,000 until 2020.

Len congratulated Ta Ann Holdings Berhad, Petronas Carigali Sdn Bhd, Press Metal Sarawak Sdn Bhd, Shin Yang Forestry Sdn Bhd, Syarikat Samling Sdn Bhd, Asean Bintulu Fertilizer Sdn Bhd, Sarawak Land Consolidation and Rehabilitation Authority ( Salcra), Trienekens Sarawak Sdn Bhd, TH Properties Sdn BHd, WTK Group, Rimbunan Hijau Group, and KTS Group for supporting the programme.

“I would like to thank the private sector for their commitment to help NREB by providing financial assistance for PALS to carry out their environmental projects and activities in schools,” he said this during NREB’s three-in- one event here yesterday.

Len added one local company had adopted 13 schools and given RM3,000 every year to each school for a period of three years.

However, he pointed out the participation of these companies, under their corporate social environmental responsibility (CSER), is still minute compared to the number of schools in Sarawak.

A total of 363 schools have set up their own PALS clubs.

The first event was the signing of memorandums of understanding ( MoUs) between eight private companies and NREB to adopt PALS clubs in schools.

There was also the launching of the environmental education module and environmental education workshop for PALS teachers.

Environmental education is a process that allows individuals to explore environmental issues, engage in problem solving, and to take action to improve the environment.

I would like to thank the private sector for their commitment to help NREB by providing financial assistance for PALS to carry out their environmental projects and activities in schools. Datu Len Talif Salleh, Assistant Minister for Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environment
