‘Police-public tie-up reduces crime, raises sense of security’

KU CHIN G: Joint crime prevention patrols between citizens and the police will help reduce crime and address the fear of crime amongst the public, thus improving community safety.

Sarawak Community Policing Associatio­n ( SCPA) chairman Datuk John Lau said a recent survey conducted by the associatio­n’s executive committee showed that community policing does help the public feel more secure.

“Such efforts ( joint patrols) help to increase public confidence in the police as well as instil safety and security in the community.

“Crime takes place in the community and it is everyone’s responsibi­lity to participat­e in crime prevention measures,” he said in a press statement yesterday.

SCPA members had this past Sunday afternoon conducted a joint community policing programme at Pisang Road West, Kampung Kudei and Poh Kwong Park.

The police team was led by ASP Norlaily Md Akhir of the Kuching district police headquarte­rs while the SCPA team was led by Pisang Road West/Jalan Intan Community Policing Unit deputy head Cecil Adenan.

Cecil shared that during the patrol, crime prevention leaf lets were distribute­d and neighbourh­ood safety was among the issues discussed with residents.

“We also emphasised that prevention is better than cure and reminded them to always look after their neighbourh­ood.

“Our efforts are in line with SCPA’s slogan ‘Our Community Our Responsibi­lity’. Keeping the environmen­t friendly and orderly plays a key role in crime reduction,” he said.

activities, adding that their close relationsh­ip with the police has contribute­d to improving safety in the area.
